That moment marked a profound shift in my understanding of where artificial intelligence is heading. We’ve entered the age of agentic AI, and nothing will be the same.
For decades, AI systems have essentially been reactive—sophisticated but ultimately passive tools awaiting human commands. But a transformation is underway. Today’s advanced systems are increasingly agentic—capable of independent action, decision-making, and goal-directed behavior without explicit human instruction for every step.
This evolution fascinates me. And terrifies me a little too.

At the heart of this transformation lies a technological breakthrough many people never hear about: embeddings. These mathematical representations translate the messy, nuanced world of human language into precise numerical vectors that machines can process. I think of embeddings as creating a sort of shared vocabulary between humans and machines. When you speak to an AI assistant, your words get converted into mathematical points in high-dimensional space, allowing the system to identify patterns, similarities, and relationships that would be impossible through simple keyword matching.
The technical reality is both more complex and more elegant than most people realize. These mathematical representations capture semantic meaning in ways that enable machines to understand that “automobile” and “car” refer to the same concept, or that “bank” means something different depending on whether you’re talking about rivers or finance.
From Chess Champions to Autonomous Agents
AI’s journey has been anything but linear. I remember when IBM’s Deep Blue defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997—it felt like machines had conquered human intelligence. Meanwhile, governments and institutions are scrambling to understand and manage these rapid advancements. I’ve been watching with interest as leaders around the world attempt to create frameworks that balance innovation with safety.
French President Emmanuel Macron has advocated for regulatory approaches that promote responsible AI development while maintaining European technological sovereignty. In India, Piyush Goyal has emphasized frameworks that can prevent AI misuse while supporting economic growth.
But regulation is inherently reactive, and technology moves faster than policy. This gap creates risk.

But the fundamental questions remain: How do we encode human values into mathematical systems? Whose values should be represented? And who decides?

Despite these unresolved questions, the integration of agentic AI into our daily lives accelerates. The line between tool and collaborator is blurring.
